Teaching Jumpga

IN MY 15 YEARS of working in ‘body movement’, including the last 5 years as a Senior Jumpga Instructor, and Yoga Teacher, I take every opportunity that comes my way to ‘spread the word’ about the magic of rebounding and Jumpga. =

There are 4 things I inevitably get told by prospective and new students: “I am not sure I can do this because I have”: (1) ‘wear and tear’ pain or arthritis in the neck, hip, knee, ankle etc; (2) a back problem/injury; (3) a weak pelvic floor; (4) no sense of balance.

These are the very reasons people SHOULD do rebounding – these are all the problems I was facing; I was diagnosed with osteo-arthritis in my knees which prevented me from being able to run any more, I had the odd ‘whoops’ moments when I laughed, despite mountain-biking a lot, my balance was shocking and, oh, my back!  Now, those problems are largely gone, because I have modified my exercise regime – and regular Jumpga has saved the day!

I recently worked with a Physiotherapist on one of Wayne Leal’s Jumpga programmes; specifically designed to rehabilitate clients with back problems and injuries.  She was so excited about how versatile the rebounder can be for all sorts of physiotherapy treatments; everything from hip replacements (something that Wayne and Josh can vouch for having both had a hip resurface), to pelvic floor weakness following childbirth, to rehab from multiple trauma or long-term illness.

All Jumpga programmes are tailored to a level that is do’able for anyone, no matter what physical issues they may have.  When I teach my class at Champneys Spa in Tring, UK, I love the challenge of adapting it for all-comers and making it relevant to each individual.

Anyone looking for a bit of inspiration to start getting fit loves the novelty of moving through cardio, balance, core work and series of stretches and can easily appreciate how it can effectively and quickly increase fitness and stamina.

Then there will be the ‘gym bunny’; looking smug about coping with the high intensity cardio workout, but gasping for breath by the end of a 10-minute workout!

Dieters love the fact that rebounding kick-starts the lymphatic system, aiding circulation and drainage of excess fluid and toxins.

People recovering from lower limb injuries love how the balance part of the programme improves the stability of the weakened joint.

Many of the men (and women) love using the hand weights to improve strength and definition of shoulder and arm muscles.

Everyone loves how the core work really does work the core and is easier than conventional moves because the rebounder is an amazing prop.

Those who know yoga, and those who do not, enjoy the asanas and yogic stretches – a chance to breath and relax after the cardio and core.  All of this – AND IT REALLY IS FUN!!!

If it were standing in front of them, anyone would be tempted to jump onto a rebounder; just to enjoy the fun of simply gently bouncing, and that feeling of weightlessness!

Whether you are in a Mind & Body group class, one-to-one, or on a Zoom call with your Jumpga Teacher, you will be shown how to modify the moves and allow you to get the most out of your Jumpga routine; to progressively help you to build from ‘beginner’ to ‘advanced’, so that you can continue the programme independently in the comfort of your own home.
