Idris Elba – the New Face of Calvin Klein

OVER THE PAST fifteen years, I have closely followed Idris Elba’s ascent to stardom. From his remarkable performances in television series and films such as The Wire, Luther, Beasts of No Nation, Concrete Cowboy, Molly’s Game, and Thor, Elba has consistently impressed audiences. When I finally met him, I was pleased to discover that his humility remains intact despite his success.

Elba’s extensive portfolio has not altered his character off-screen. His grounded nature shone through when he was chosen to model Calvin Klein’s latest collection, featuring modern and minimalist styles. Elba expressed his appreciation for the opportunity, describing it as a significant compliment in an interview with Vanity Fair.

The campaign, shot by photographer Mert Alas, showcases Elba in various settings across London, wearing Calvin Klein’s sleek and timeless designs. The wardrobe includes a sateen bomber jacket, a classic black suit paired with a white T-shirt, white jeans, and other staple pieces. This project was not Elba’s first collaboration with Alas, and their reunion allowed Elba to contribute his vision for the photoshoot. He aimed to stay true to the essence of a classic Calvin Klein advertisement, emphasising his desire to be authentic. “I didn’t want to reinvent the wheel,” Elba stated. “I wanted to be in a classic [Calvin Klein]–looking ad and wanted to just be Idris, you know? Just to be me and not try to be a model or whatever, just be myself in these shots.”

While Elba is known for his versatility in portraying a myriad of characters, this campaign offered a rare chance to capture his genuine persona and energy. He shared how people are often surprised when they meet him in real life, as they do not expect the person behind his various roles. This campaign aimed to reveal his true self, with numerous shots depicting him in everyday scenarios, such as walking down the street and interacting with his environment.

Elba finds Calvin Klein’s designs to align seamlessly with his own “simple and classic” everyday style. He mentioned that he could easily incorporate these pieces into his current wardrobe. Though he is no stranger to dressing up for career-related events and making a fashion statement when necessary, his usual attire is clean, straightforward, and functional. “These are pieces that I would literally integrate into my wardrobe now. When I go places for my career or go to an event, I tend to dress it up. I don’t mind making a splash if I have to. But my day-to-day wear is pretty clean, simple, and functional,” he explained.

As Elba embarks on the third decade of his career, which began in 1994 on British television, he reflects on his journey and the significance of his accomplishments. Having a successful, long-lasting career, whether in film or fashion, is a notable achievement. Being part of a prestigious campaign like Calvin Klein’s is a testament to his enduring appeal and versatility. “More than anything, to just have a lifelong career, and to be celebrated, and [to be asked to] be in a campaign like that is all one and the same achievement. It’s a lovely achievement. It makes you feel good. It’s good for my ego, at least. But I hadn’t ever seen myself to be in one of these campaigns,” Elba admitted.

Despite his initial disbelief, the world was ready to see him in Calvin Klein. Elba concluded, “It always seemed like whoever they picked was cooler than cool and so now that’s me, and it’s very nice.” His inclusion in the campaign marks yet another milestone in his illustrious career.
