Sundried UK Inspired

IN LIFE, WE often encounter transformative moments that propel us towards change. There have been a few defining moments in my own life that inspired me to lead a healthy and fit lifestyle. These experiences not only reshaped my perspective but also inspired me to embark on a remarkable journey of self-discovery.

It began with a seemingly innocent encounter involving a set of “fat scales” at my previous workplace. As a dedicated cyclist, commuting daily, I anticipated exceptional results. However, to my surprise, my visceral fat, an indicator of potential health risks, was alarmingly high. Though it still fell within the government’s threshold for healthiness, this served as a wake-up call, indicating that I was headed down the wrong path.

Another pivotal moment was catching a glimpse of myself in a wetsuit around the age of 30. Granted, not many people look great in a wetsuit, but I couldn’t help but notice the emergence of an undesirable paunch. It was a visual reminder that my body was gradually succumbing to neglect.

Helping my father up from a fall, I realised the extent to which my physical condition had deteriorated. Struggling to shift his weight, I was forced to seek additional assistance due to his size. Witnessing my limitations firsthand, I became acutely aware of the potential burden I could impose on my loved ones if I allowed myself to continue down this path. It was a sobering moment that spurred me into action.

In my youth, strength and speed were my priority. As I entered my twenties, looking good replaced that. However, during my thirties, I allowed myself to become complacent, failing to acknowledge the changes my body required. It was then I realised a fundamental transformation was necessary, which paved the way for my introduction to triathlon training.

Triathlon, a sport that accommodates participants of all skill levels, offers a unique opportunity for self-competition. Engaging in this rigorous pursuit demanded dedication, but the rewards were like nothing I’d ever experienced before. Training like a triathlete not only elevated my fitness levels but also strengthened the determination within me.

However, with the birth of my second child, time constraints encroached upon my triathlon training.  I did not abandon my commitment to fitness but instead shifted my focus towards maximising efficiency and optimising fitness returns. I took pride in my ability to complete extensive bike rides or runs based on my core level of fitness alone.

My journey was not without obstacles. Breaking my femur presented a formidable setback, significantly impeding my running abilities. Despite this I refused to let adversity define me. Within a week, I found myself pedalling away on a stationary bike, using it primarily for mobility purposes. It took an entire year before I could run pain-free again, only to be met with another hurdle—a torn meniscus in my good knee. It seemed that attempting one-legged squats at the age of 40 was too ambitious!

In the face of time constraints and the inevitable effects of ageing, efficiency became my ally. For me, it meant dedicating three days a week to running and two 30-minute indoor bike rides. Incorporating high-intensity interval training (HIIT) ensured that I pushed my limits, reaching my maximum effort approximately 20 times during each session.

Beyond my personal journey, my professional life also underwent a transformative phase. I previously owned a sunglasses retail business, which was eventually acquired by a larger conglomerate. This transition afforded me the opportunity to delve further into my passion for fitness, ultimately leading me to establish Sundried.

Sundried stands as a testament to my commitment to quality activewear that is ethically produced and deeply rooted in sustainability. Our vision for the next decade is to transform Sundried into a sustainable business that thrives in the United States and Europe, and becomes a household name in the United Kingdom.

While the journey of building Sundried has been rewarding, it hasn’t come without its fair share of challenges. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the complexities of Brexit have posed significant obstacles. Although the pandemic sparked a surge in fitness trends, supply chain disruptions hampered our ability to seize the opportunities that arose. Furthermore, Brexit, a self-inflicted wound caused by the British people, necessitated a years-long process of reconstructing our operational frameworks due to the sudden closure of overnight shipping routes to Europe.

In spite of these challenges, Sundried continues to grow organically, propelled by word-of-mouth referrals and strategic collaborations with smaller clubs and events, all in an effort to expand brand awareness. Our unwavering dedication to our mission fuels our relentless pursuit of progress.

Becoming a Meta-Ager, a person who defies age and embraces the fullness of life, should be a priority for everyone. With ageing populations becoming the norm in most countries, it is crucial that we take charge of our wellbeing to avoid burdening society unnecessarily. While it is true that injuries and age will inevitably slow us down, it is within our power to stay proactive in matters of health and fitness. Though we may encounter health issues that are beyond our control, it is essential to proactively address the ones we can influence. By maintaining our physical fitness and overall wellness, we can strive to live vibrantly and independently for as long as possible.

I urge you to embrace the transformative power of fitness. Take that first step towards a healthier and fitter lifestyle. Let these experiences and the lessons I’ve learned inspire you to embark on your own incredible journey. The path may not always be easy, but the rewards that await you—improved physical well-being, heightened mental clarity, and a renewed zest for life—are beyond measure. Embrace the challenge, overcome the obstacles, and discover the boundless potential that lives within you.
